She was born Indira Nehru on the 19th of November 1917 in Allahabad with her parents Kamala as well as Jawaharlal Nehru. She completed her Metric at Pune University and went to Shantiniketan in West Bengal.

Gandhi joined the working committee of the Congress Party in 1955. Four years later, she was elected as the party’s president. After the loss of her father’s life in the year 1964, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper level of the Indian parliament, and appointed the minister for information and radio. If her father’s successor Lal Bahadur Shastri, died abruptly in the year 1966 she was promoted to the post of prime minister.
