On August 18, 2020, a promotional poster was released announcing Adipurush as an adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayana. Prabhas has been cast as Lord Rama in the film, which is being directed by Om Raut, known for his work on the period action movie Tanhaji (2020).
Raut drew inspiration from the 1992 Japanese film Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, which motivated him to use modern technology to bring the epic Ramayana to the big screen.
In September 2020, the creators of Adipurush announced that Prabhas would be portraying the character of Lord Rama, whose name in the movie is Raghava. Saif Ali Khan, who had previously played an antagonist in Raut’s Tanhaji, was cast as Ravana with the name Lankesh. While there were rumors that Anushka Shetty.
Anushka Sharma, Kiara Advani, and Keerthy Suresh were being considered for the role of Sita, it was confirmed in November 2020 that Kriti Sanon had been chosen to play the part. Sunny Singh, who joined the film’s cast in February 2021, is playing the role of Lord Rama’s younger brother, Lakshmana.
The motion capture shoot for Adipurush started on January 19, 2021. The film’s Muhurat shot and formal launch took place on February 2, 2021, in Mumbai, India, and principal photography began on the same day, according to the filmmakers.
Unfortunately, a massive fire accident occurred at the filming location in Mumbai on the same day, and as a result, duplicate sets were constructed. In October 2021, both Saif Ali Khan and Kriti Sanon completed their respective shoots for the film.
The music of the film is composed by Ajay-Atul. The first single titled “Jai Shri Ram” was released on 6 April 2023 on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti.
On October 2, 2022, Adipurush’s teaser was released on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. However, it was heavily criticized for its special effects and CGI. Nonetheless, the film’s trailer was later released on May 9, 2023, and was received more positively due to its improved visual effects.
Adipurush was originally scheduled to be released theatrically on August 11, 2022. However, the release was postponed due to the release of Laal Singh Chaddha. The film was then rescheduled to release on June 16, 2023.
