Asuran, translated as “Demon,” is a Tamil-language period action drama film released in 2019. It was written and directed by Vetrimaaran and produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu. The film is based on the novel Vekkai, which means “Heat,” written by Poomani. Starring Dhanush in the lead role, it also marks the Tamil debut of Manju Warrier, along with Ken Karunas and Teejay Arunasalam.

The music for the film was composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, while the cinematography was handled by Velraj, and editing was done by R. Ramar.On 4th October 2019, Asuran was released in theaters and proved to be a commercial success at the box office. The film received critical acclaim and went on to win two awards at the 67th National Film Awards:
Best Feature Film in Tamil and Best Actor for Dhanush. It was also selected as one of the ten Indian films to be screened at the 78th Golden Globe Awards (2021) in the Best Foreign Film category. Furthermore, Asuran was showcased at the 51st International Film Festival of India in the Indian Panorama section. The film’s popularity led to a Telugu remake titled Narappa, released in 2021.
Plot
In the late 1970s, in Tirunelveli, there are two separate groups hiding from the police in different parts of the village. One group consists of a man named Sivasaami and his son Chidambaram, who are seen carrying homemade bombs while trekking across a river. The other group comprises Sivasaami’s wife, Pachaiyamma, her brother Murugesan, and their daughter Lakshmi.
The narrator reveals that Sivasaami and Chidambaram are father and son. However, their relationship is portrayed as distant and almost abusive, in contrast to Sivasaami’s close bond with his older son, Velmurugan. The family belongs to the Dalit community and works as farmers in Thekkoor, a southern village.

Development
Following the release of Velaiilla Pattadhari 2 in 2017, producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu entered into a three-film agreement with Dhanush. After the success of Vada Chennai in 2018, director Vetrimaaran expressed his intention to create a sequel to the film, with Dhanush reprising his role.
Music
The soundtrack album and background score is composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, collaborating with Dhanush and Vetrimaaran for the third time after Polladhavan and Aadukalam. The soundtrack album consists of seven songs, with lyrics written by Ekadesi, Yugabharathi, Eknath, and Arunraja Kamaraj.
Release
Initially, the release date for Asuran was set for 2nd October 2019, aligning with the significant occasion of Gandhi Jayanti and the Vijayadashami festival weekend in India. However, on 8th August, the makers decided to move the release date forward by one day, and the film was ultimately released on 4th October 2019.
