Chhichhore (transl. Frivolous) is a comedy-drama film in the Hindi language that was released in 2019. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and written by Tiwari in collaboration with Piyush Gupta and Nikhil Mehrotra, the film was produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under the banner of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment. The distribution rights were acquired by Fox Star Studios.

Drawing inspiration from Nitesh Tiwari’s own experiences as a student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, the film features an ensemble cast including Sushant Singh Rajput, Shraddha Kapoor, Varun Sharma, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Naveen Polishetty, Tushar Pandey, and Saharsh Kumar Shukla in the lead roles. Additionally, Shishir Sharma and Mohammad Samad deliver impactful performances in supporting roles.

Plot

Anirudh “Anni” Pathak, a middle-aged man who has been through a divorce, shares a home with his teenage son, Raghav Pathak. Raghav, an aspiring engineer, anxiously awaits the results of his entrance examination with hopes of getting accepted into the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). In anticipation of Raghav’s success, Anni presents him with a bottle of champagne as a gift, promising to celebrate together.

However, the champagne gift only amplifies Raghav’s fears about the possibility of failure. The following day, while Raghav is checking the results at a friend’s apartment, he discovers that he did not qualify for the IIT-JEE exams. Overwhelmed by the fear of being labeled a “loser,” Raghav makes a desperate decision and intentionally falls from the balcony in an attempt to end his life.

Chhichhore is inspired by writer-director Nitesh Tiwari’s own experiences of college life as a metallurgical engineering student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, his alma mater, which is depicted in the film as the ‘National College of Technology’; although not completely biographical.

Marketing and Release

Towards the end of February 2019, the cast of the film Chhichhore filmed a video where they wore their characters’ costumes, showcasing the behind-the-scenes process of creating the film’s poster. This video was released on May 30, 2019.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack to the film was composed by Pritam, while the lyrics were written by Amitabh Bhattacharya.

Reception

In Sukanya Verma’s review for Rediff, she expressed that Chhichhore provided such an enjoyable experience that it overshadowed any flaws in the film. Verma awarded the movie 3.5 out of 4 stars. Meanwhile, Sreeparna Sengupta from The Times of India gave Chhichhore a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars, praising the performances of Sushant Singh Rajput, Shraddha Kapoor, Varun Sharma, and Tahir Raj Bhasin.

Box office

On its opening day, Chhichhore collected an impressive ₹6.92 crores (₹69.2 million) at the box office. The film witnessed growth in its collections on the second day (Saturday) and third day (Sunday), earning ₹34.77 crores (₹347.7 million) by the end of its opening weekend.
