Divine known under the screen name Divine (stylized with the suffix DIVINE) is an Indian rapper hailing from Mumbai, Maharashtra. His popularity began to rise with the release of the track “Yeh Mera Bombay” (2013). The breakthrough came when he released his hit song “Mere Gully Mein” (2019) featuring singer and rapper from Mumbai Naezy.

On the 12th of December, 2020 he was the very first Indian rapper to appear on the Spotify Times Square billboard in New York City for his album Punya Paap (2020) which won the top spot in the charts on Apple Music India. He debuted at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards in 2022 becoming the first Indian hip-hop superstar to attend the Grammys. He is well-known for his street-life image of Mumbai.

Born, Childhood & Early Life

Divine was born on the 2nd of October, 1990, in Andheri, Mumbai, Maharastra, India. He was born in a strict conservative Christian family and comes from a middle-class, poor Christian family.

He was raised by himself in the slum area of Chawls located in J B Nagar Andheri Mumbai without family members since his father had to leave his family when he is at an early age, and his mother worked in Qatar to earn a living.

Education

Divine was a very good student during his time at school. He graduated from St. John The Evangelist High School located in Marol Andheri in Mumbai, India.

After completing his education after which he is accepted into Rishi Dayaram, Seth Hassaram National College, and Seth Wassiamull Assomull Science College which is also called R. D. National College located in Bandra, Mumbai, and completed his degree there. Their passion for Rap music has been a constant since his college days.

Career

When Vivian was a child, his friend gifted him a CD that contained songs from Eminem as well as 50 Cent. When he listened to these tracks, Eminem and 50 Cent, Vivian was inspired and began writing rap lyrics. In the beginning, Vivian took more than five hours to write perfect lyrics. He began with his own independent musician. He recorded his debut song “Coming For You” with his Nokia N8 mobile.

In his time at college when he was in college, he was part of Mumbai’s Finest, a hip-hop team in Mumbai, and was trained by a rapper named Ace. 2013 was the year he received acclaim for his debut solo track “Yeh Mera Bombay.”
