Her curiosity, independent personality, and love of learning how things worked were cultivated by her mother who was a kind and generous woman who made sure that her daughters all attended school at an age when education was viewed as unneeded for girls.

Education

Chawla attended Tagore Baal Niketan Senior Secondary School in Karnal for her primary and secondary education in India. NASA invited the school to be part of its Summer Space Experience Program after Chawla became a NASA astronaut. Chawla determined to make sure that women of the age of 18 in India were able to access science-based education.

Career

Kalpana Chawla was a licensed flight instructor who assessed the aircraft and gilders. She also had a commercial pilot license that covered single-engine and multi-engine aircraft Hydroplanes, gliders, and hydroplanes. Kalpana was a certified technician class amateur Radio person that was certified through the Federal Communication Commission.

Due to her numerous degrees in Aerospace and Aerospace Engineering, she offered employment with NASA as Vice President of Overset Methods, Inc. in 1993. Heavily involved in the research of computational fluid dynamics in the field of Vertical/Short takeoffs and landings. It wasn’t until 1995 that she was a participant in the NASA Astronaut Corps.

Death

It was on February 1, 2003, that the spaceship STS-107 exploded in the Texas region as it entered the atmosphere of Earth. The tragic incident ended seven crew members, including Kalpana.
