Development

In early 2021, news surfaced that Lokesh Kanagaraj and Vijay would join forces for a second film following their collaboration on “Master” (2021). However, Lokesh was initially committed to directing “Vikram” (2022), while Vijay had signed up for Nelson’s “Beast” (2022) and Vamshi Paidipally’s untitled project, later titled “Varisu” (2023).

In March 2022, Lokesh confirmed that discussions were underway for him to helm Vijay’s 67th film. Subsequently, in May, Lokesh officially confirmed the project, tentatively titled “Thalapathy 67.”

Pre-production

Lokesh Kanagaraj dedicated approximately six months to the writing and pre-production process of the film. For the script, Lokesh collaborated with Rathna Kumar, marking their third consecutive partnership. Additionally, Dheeraj Vaidy, known for directing “Jil Jung Juk” (2016), also joined the writing team for the project.

Music

The film’s soundtrack is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, marking his fourth collaboration with Vijay after “Kaththi” (2014), “Master,” and “Beast.” This is also Anirudh’s third collaboration with Lokesh Kanagaraj, following their work on “Master” and “Vikram.”

The music rights for the film were acquired by Sony Music India for ₹16 crore (approximately US$2.0 million). The track titled “Bloody Sweet,” featured in the two-minute promo video, was released on February 3, 2023, along with the promo. The English lyrics for the song were penned by Heisenberg, and it was performed by Anirudh and Siddharth Basrur.

Release

Theatrical

‘Leo’ is slated for a theatrical release on October 19, 2023. Alongside the Tamil version, the film is anticipated to be released in dubbed versions, catering to Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi-speaking audiences as well.

Pre-Release Business

According to Indian trade sources, ‘Leo’ is expected to make a significant pre-release recovery of ₹413 crore (approximately US$52 million). This impressive figure includes the revenue generated from the sale of satellite, digital, music, and theatrical rights.

Out of the total amount, ₹246 crore (approximately US$31 million) has been earned through the film’s non-theatrical rights. Furthermore, the overseas theatrical rights were sold to Phars Films for ₹60 crore (approximately US$7.5 million). If these reports hold, ‘Leo’ would be the first Tamil film to achieve such a substantial pre-release recovery.
