Childhood & Early Life
Born on August 20, 1946, in Sidlaghatta, Karnataka, he came from a middle-class background. While his uncle pursued a career as a civil servant and his father hoped he would follow the same path, Narayana had different aspirations. He set his sights on becoming an engineer, which was a highly esteemed profession in India at that time.
After completing his schooling, Narayana appeared for the entrance test of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and achieved a commendable rank, earning a scholarship. However, despite the scholarship, it wasn’t sufficient to cover his educational expenses, and his father was unable to afford the fees.
N R Narayana Murthy studied electrical engineering at the National Institute of Engineering in Mysore, and he completed his M. Tech. at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur in 1969.
He is married to Sudha Kulkarni and has two children with her, a son Rohan Murthy and a daughter Akshata Murthy. His wife is a published author in Kannada and English, and also a renowned social activist.
Following his time at IIT, Murthy initially joined IIM Ahmedabad as a research associate, where he worked under a faculty member. Subsequently, he served as the chief systems programmer. During this period, Murthy played a pivotal role in the development of India’s inaugural time-sharing computer system.
