Qala (transl. Art) is an Indian Hindi-language psychological drama film released in 2022. It is written and directed by Anvita Dutt. The film is produced by Karnesh Sharma under Clean Slate Films and features Tripti Dimri, Swastika Mukherjee, and Babil Khan in his film debut.

Set in 1940s Machilipatnam, Qala tells the story of an aspiring singer and her complex relationship with her domineering mother. The film opens with Qala Manjushree, who has just won the prestigious “Golden Vinyl” award. During interviews with journalists, they mention her brother, which deeply unsettles Qala. In response, she vehemently denies having a brother.
Through a flashback, we learn that Qala’s mother, Urmila, was pregnant with twins but tragically, her brother was stillborn. Filled with anger and frustration, Urmila attempts to smother Qala in a fit of rage. Despite this dark incident, Urmila trains Qala in the art of music but strictly warns her against becoming a courtesan.

This film marks the second collaboration between Tripti Dimri, Anvita Dutt, and Clean Slate Filmz following their work on Bulbbul (2020). Principal photography commenced in April 2021 in the picturesque region of Kashmir. The filming process concluded in October 2021, signifying the completion of the project.
The film’s music was composed by Amit Trivedi, with the background score being handled by Sagar Desai. A guest composition, the song “Udh Jaayega,” was contributed by another artist. The lyrics for the songs were penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya, Swanand Kirkire, Varun Grover, and Kausar Munir. Furthermore, on 29 August 2022, the teaser for the ghazal titled “Phero Na Najariya” was released.

Marketing and Release
The teaser for the film was unveiled on 24 September 2022, exclusively on Netflix. Following that, the official trailer of the film was released on 15 November 2022. The much-anticipated World Premiere of Qala took place at the 53rd International Film Festival of India in Goa on 24 November 2022. Finally, the film was made available to audiences worldwide on Netflix starting on 1 December 2022.
