Plot

Thaiyal Nayagi, a courageous investigative journalist, dedicates herself to championing equality, democracy, and justice through her work at an online news portal. Unexpectedly, she becomes the prime suspect in the murder of Police Inspector Krishnamurthy and is apprehended by a special police task force. However, her life takes a dramatic turn when a team of FBI and CBI agents intervenes to rescue her.

In a poignant moment, as Aalim, a significant figure in Thaiyal’s life, nears the end of his life, he confesses his love for Sushmitha and presents her with a precious talisman that she had previously given to a taxi driver. Thaiyal is shattered by the loss of Aalim and grieves profoundly. Eventually, Thaiyal and Sushmitha safely return to India, where Thaiyal channels her emotions into writing a book that intricately narrates the story of Aalim’s life.

The film was tentatively titled Trisha61. On 20 April 2019, the title was announced to be Raangi. The shooting of the film was wrapped up on 12 February 2020.

Music

The film’s captivating music is composed by C. Sathya, marking his third collaboration with director M. Saravanan after their successful ventures Engaeyum Eppothum and Ivan Veramathiri. The first single from the film, titled “Panithuli,” was released on December 15, 2020.

Raangi was initially scheduled for a theatrical release on December 30, 2022, coinciding with the release of Kovai Sarala’s Sembi. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film’s release strategy was altered. Initially, there were plans for a digital release, but those plans were eventually abandoned, and the film was released exclusively in theaters as originally intended.

The post-theatrical streaming rights of the film have been sold to Sun NXT and Netflix, while the satellite rights of the film are sold to Sun TV. The film is scheduled for its digital premiere on the streaming platform on 29 January 2023

Reception

The highly regarded critic from India Herald described Raangi as “Unexpectedly fantastic” and praised it as the ideal action thriller to enjoy over the weekend. Logesh Balachandran of The Times of India awarded the film 3.5 out of 5 stars, expressing that Raangi exceeded expectations and is a perfect choice for a thrilling weekend experience. On the other hand, Janani K of India Today gave the film a rating of 2 out of 5 stars.
