Childhood and Early Life

Salma Hayek was the daughter of Sami Hayek Dominguez and Diana Jimenez Medina (an opera singer) in Coatzacoalcos. She was raised in Mexico by a wealthy Roman Catholic family.

She went to the US at the age of 12 to study at the Sacred Heart Academy in Louisiana. When she was in high school, she was diagnosed with ADHD as well as dyslexia. She went back to Mexico to continue her studies at the Universidad Iberoamericana in international relations. It was then that she realized that acting was something she wanted to do.

Hayek made her first screen appearance in Un Nuevo Amerce (1988), where she won the TVyNovelas award for Best Debut Actress. Televise selected Hayek at 23 to play the role of the title in Teresa (1989-1991), which was a popular Mexican telenovela. It made her a national star.
