The Kashmir Files, a 2022 Hindi-language drama film, is a work of fiction written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri. The film is based on the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from Indian-administered Kashmir in the 1990s. The story depicted in the film portrays the exodus and the events leading up to it as a genocide.

However, this notion is widely disputed by scholars who have not found evidence to support such claims. The film suggests that the facts surrounding the exodus were suppressed through a conspiracy of silence. Upon its release, The Kashmir Files received mixed reviews.  While the cinematography and acting were praised as being compelling.

The storyline was criticized for attempting to rewrite established history and propagating Islamophobia. Supporters of the film, however, praised it for bringing attention to what they claim is an overlooked aspect of Kashmir’s history. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several BJP ministers have praised the film for its portrayal of the events.

Plot

Throughout the film, the plot oscillates between two different time periods: the contemporary period set in the year 2020, and flashbacks to the late 1980s and early 1990s. The flashback scenes are set in the Kashmir region of India during the period of 1989-1990, when Islamic militants carried out violent attacks against Kashmiri Hindu Pandits, forcing them to flee the region.
