Theri (transl. Spark) is a Tamil-language action thriller film released in 2016. It was written and directed by Atlee Kumar and produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu under the banner V Creations. The film drew inspiration from Mani Ratnam’s movie Chatriyan. Starring Vijay, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and Amy Jackson, Theri features a talented cast.

Plot

Joseph Kuruvilla, a non-violent individual who runs a bakery and lives with his young daughter Niveditha “Nivi,” enjoys a peaceful life. During this time, he develops a friendship with Annie, Nivi’s teacher, who gradually develops romantic feelings for him. However, Annie eventually discovers Joseph’s true identity as DCP Vijay Kumar, an honest police officer in Chennai. When confronted, Joseph opens up about his past.

In his past, Vijay encounters an elderly man who seeks his help in finding his missing daughter, Raji, an IT worker. Vijay takes up the case and tirelessly investigates, only to discover within ten hours that Raji has been sexually assaulted and killed. During his investigation, Vijay uncovers evidence linking the crime to Ashwin, the son of Labour Minister Vanamaamalai. Three days after Raji’s tragic death, Vijay heads to Vanamaamalai’s residence to arrest Ashwin.

Development

Vijay conveyed his desire to collaborate with director Atlee on a project in January 2014, having been impressed by Atlee’s directorial debut film Raja Rani (2013). Atlee, being a fan of Vijay and appreciating his recent projects, also eagerly anticipated the opportunity to work with the actor. Reports indicated that Kalaipuli S. Thanu would finance the project, and it was officially announced in September 2014.

Music

The film’s music, including the soundtrack and score, is composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar. This marks Prakash’s second collaboration with Vijay and Atlee, and it holds special significance as his 50th project as a composer. Prakash began working on the film’s songs in November 2014 and completed the composition process by January 2016.

Marketing

Promotional stills from the film were released on 15 January 2016, coinciding with the festival of Pongal. Subsequently, the official teaser of the film was unveiled on 5 February 2016. However, there was a minor setback as the teaser, which was initially uploaded at midnight, faced copyright claims from an anonymous channel. Thankfully, the technical team was able to resolve the issue, and the teaser was restored for the viewers to enjoy.

Release

Theatrical

Originally slated for release on 14 April 2016 with a U/A certificate, Theri underwent several cuts by the Central Board of Film Certification to reduce the portrayal of severe violence and gore. As a result of these edits, the film eventually obtained a ‘U’ certificate, making it suitable for a wider audience.
