Ponniyin Selvan: I, also known as PS-1, is a highly successful 2022 Indian Tamil-language epic historical action-adventure film. Directed by Mani Ratnam, who co-wrote the screenplay with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan, the film was produced by Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah under the banners of Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions. The movie is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel, Ponniyin Selvan, and is the first of two cinematic parts.

The film proved to be a box office sensation, grossing more than ₹500 crores (US$63 million) and breaking records to become the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2022. Furthermore, it became the second-highest-grossing Tamil film of all time and the 15th-highest-grossing Indian film of all time. The movie was lauded by audiences and critics alike and was even nominated for six awards at the 16th Asian Film Awards, including Best Film.

Plot

During the 10th century, the Chola Dynasty was ruled by Emperor Sundara Chozhar, who reigned prosperously in South India. His two sons, Aditha Karikalan and Arulmozhi Varman, also known as Ponniyin Selvan, were leading the empire’s conquests at Kanchi and Lanka, respectively.

However, sensing that something was amiss with his courtiers, Aditha Karikalan sent his trusted associate, Prince Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan of the Vaanar clan, to investigate. Vallavaraiyan was to subsequently report his findings to the Emperor’s daughter, Princess Kundavai, and Emperor Sundara Chozhar.

Production

Ponniyin Selvan was originally planned as a single film with a budget of ₹500 crore (US$63 million). After principal photography commenced in December 2019, it was reported in January 2020 that the film would be split into two parts,  which was confirmed by Mani Ratnam that April.

Music

Mani Ratnam’s frequent collaborator A. R. Rahman composed the film score and soundtrack for the movie. Tips purchased the audio rights to the film. The soundtrack comprises six original songs, including “Ponni Nadhi,” “Chola Chola,” “Ratchasa Maamaney,” “Sol,” “Alaikadal,” and “Devaralan Aattam,” all of which were composed by A.R. Rahman.

Theatrical

Ponniyin Selvan: II was globally released on April 28, 2023, in theaters worldwide, including standard, IMAX, 4DX, and EPIQ formats. This movie is the first South Indian film to be released in the 4DX format.

Distribution

Red Giant Movies has acquired the distribution rights of the film in Tamil Nadu, while Dil Raju’s Sri Venkateswara Creations has acquired the distribution rights for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Gokulam Gopalan’s Sree Gokulam Movies has acquired the distribution rights for Kerala, and Pen India Limited has acquired the distribution rights for North India.
