Udta Punjab, released in 2016, is an Indian crime drama film directed and written by Abhishek Chaubey. It was co-written by Sudip Sharma and produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Sameer Nair, and Aman Gill. The film was a collaboration between Balaji Motion Pictures and Phantom Films, with involvement from Anurag Kashyap, Vikas Bahl, and Vikramaditya Motwane.

The storyline of Udta Punjab loosely revolves around the rampant drug abuse among the youth in Punjab, India, and the intricate web of conspiracies surrounding it. The cast includes Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, and Diljit Dosanjh.

Udta Punjab received significant recognition at the 62nd Filmfare Awards, garnering nine nominations, including Best Film, Best Director (Abhishek Chaubey), Best Actor (Shahid Kapoor), Best Supporting Actress (Kareena Kapoor), and Best Supporting Actor (Diljit Dosanjh). The film secured four awards, including Best Actress (Alia Bhatt) and Best Actor (Critics) (Shahid Kapoor).

Plot

In the film, three Pakistani youths engage in the illicit act of throwing drug packets across the border into India, intending to retrieve them later. Tejinder “Tommy” Singh, also known as “Gabru” among his fans, is a young and prosperous Punjabi musician who leads a lavish lifestyle.

Accompanied by his flamboyant crew led by Tayaji and cousin Jassi, he frequently indulges in cocaine consumption. Tommy gains fame for his high-energy songs that often glorify violence and drug addiction.

As the story progresses, it is revealed that the government launches an inquiry into Brar’s (Tommy’s) activities, resulting in a significant crackdown on the drug problem. Meanwhile, in Goa, Tommy contacts Bauria and inquires about her real name. Bauria, sitting by the beach, notices a foreigner enjoying himself and gets inspired.

Music

The music for ‘Udta Punjab’ was skillfully composed by Amit Trivedi, featuring lyrics by the late Shiv Kumar Batalvi, Shellee, and Varun Grover. The background music was beautifully crafted by Benedict Taylor and Naren Chandavarkar. The music rights for the film were obtained by Zee Music Company.

Production

Regarding the soundtrack, Amit Trivedi expressed, “To match the film’s dark theme, I had to blend psychedelic trance and hip hop, resulting in a unique and intense musical experience. It will push the boundaries of Bollywood music with its edginess and boldness, unlike anything witnessed before.”

Release

The film faced challenges with the censor board due to profanities and depictions of drug use. On June 9, 2016, the Censor Board (CBFC) issued a list of 94 cuts and 13 guidelines that needed to be addressed before the movie could be released.
