The storyline of Udta Punjab loosely revolves around the rampant drug abuse among the youth in Punjab, India, and the intricate web of conspiracies surrounding it. The cast includes Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, and Diljit Dosanjh.

Udta Punjab received significant recognition at the 62nd Filmfare Awards, garnering nine nominations, including Best Film, Best Director (Abhishek Chaubey), Best Actor (Shahid Kapoor), Best Supporting Actress (Kareena Kapoor), and Best Supporting Actor (Diljit Dosanjh). The film secured four awards, including Best Actress (Alia Bhatt) and Best Actor (Critics) (Shahid Kapoor).

In the film, three Pakistani youths engage in the illicit act of throwing drug packets across the border into India, intending to retrieve them later. Tejinder “Tommy” Singh, also known as “Gabru” among his fans, is a young and prosperous Punjabi musician who leads a lavish lifestyle.

Accompanied by his flamboyant crew led by Tayaji and cousin Jassi, he frequently indulges in cocaine consumption. Tommy gains fame for his high-energy songs that often glorify violence and drug addiction.

As the story progresses, it is revealed that the government launches an inquiry into Brar’s (Tommy’s) activities, resulting in a significant crackdown on the drug problem. Meanwhile, in Goa, Tommy contacts Bauria and inquires about her real name. Bauria, sitting by the beach, notices a foreigner enjoying himself and gets inspired.

Track listing

Amit Trivedi is the sole composer of all the music.

Regarding the soundtrack, Amit Trivedi expressed, “To match the film’s dark theme, I had to blend psychedelic trance and hip hop, resulting in a unique and intense musical experience. It will push the boundaries of Bollywood music with its edginess and boldness, unlike anything witnessed before.”

The film faced challenges with the censor board due to profanities and depictions of drug use. On June 9, 2016, the Censor Board (CBFC) issued a list of 94 cuts and 13 guidelines that needed to be addressed before the movie could be released.
